The 92nd Academy Awards will take place on Sunday evening. Critics are rife since the announcement of the nominees, who castigate the low presence of women and people of color based on figures from the academy: 98% of the pretenders are white, and no woman is included in the prestigious category of "best director".

Almost every year it's the same catchphrase ... and almost nothing changes the year after. The selection of the Oscars 2020 is once again criticized for having given too good a share to white men, a recurring criticism. In the best director category, for example, there are only men. While Greta Gerwig could for example claim it for The four daughters of Doctor March, which also appears in the selection of the "best film". In 92 editions, only five women were nominated in the prestigious category of best director. Only one finally won the title: Kathryn Bigelow, in 2010 for Minesweepers .

To defend itself, the Academy of Oscars highlights the fact that women have never been more present in nominations. They are 65 this year, out of 209 candidates in total. Perhaps to make people forget the controversy, the Oscar party, produced by two women, has also chosen a large number of international stars of various origins to present the prizes on stage, including the Spanish Penelope Cruz, the Mexican Salma Hayek and the Israeli Gal Gadot.

98% of the nominees are white

The other part of the controversy concerns the skin color of the nominees. This year, 98% of them are white, which hardly represents American diversity. Thousands of Internet users have castigated this low proportion on social networks, reusing the hashtag #oscarsowhite, which has been extremely popular since 2016.

Sacred "best actor" for his role in Joker at the BAFTAs, Joaquin Phenix had taken advantage of his speech of thanks to evoke the absence of nominees of color. "We are sending a very clear message to people of color that you are not welcome here," he said, calling later on "to do the hard work to really understand systemic racism". Like the Oscar, the BAFTAs are regularly criticized for their lack of diversity.

The Academy of Oscars recognizes that things have yet to evolve, with a composition of 68% male and 84% white. But points out that for the first time in history this year, women accounted for half of the new integrations.
