Reproductions of the Oscar statuettes arranged on Hollywood Bouvelard, in Los Angeles, ahead of the 92nd ceremony - Chris Pizzello / AP / SIPA

Will France shine at the Oscars? The 92nd edition of the most famous American cinema awards ceremony will be held on the night of Sunday to Monday - kick-off will be at 2:00 am Paris time. In theory, six statuettes could be attributed to French artists. In reality, such a harvest seems almost impossible given the competition.

  • "Les Misérables", undoubtedly parasitized masterpiece

Named in the Best International Film category, the poignant and political Les Misérables by Ladj Ly would have its own chances… if it were not in the face of the Parasite tornado, whose success was worldwide. The presence of French film in the selection remains a reward in itself. There is no doubt that if he leaves empty-handed from Los Angeles, the film will catch up on February 28 at the Césars, where he has 11 nominations.

  • A good surprise for "I lost my body"?

The category of Best Animated Film seems to have already been done. Between the Klaus of Netflix, the third installment of Dragons of DreamWorks and the fourth "Toy Story" of Disney / Pixar, we are rather preparing for a fight of big productions. Unless the poetry of the outsider I lost my body by Jérémy Clapin (the only adult film in the category) ultimately seduces the Academy.

  • Two chances in court

France is also in competition for the Oscar for best short film with Nefta Football Club by Yves Piat and Damien Megherbi, and for the best animation short film with Mémorable by Bruno Collet and Jean-François Le Corre. Two categories where the forecasts are often uncertain and where three-color directors seem to have their chances.

  • Three French people in American productions

Beyond the hexagonal productions, French artists could also allow to bring the statuette home. Among them, the great regular of the ceremony Alexandre Desplat. Winner in 2018 for the music of The Shape of Water , the Frenchman competes this year for the best original music with the film The four girls of Doctor March . This is his eleventh Oscar nomination in this category.

But it is in the category of the best special effects that the French chances are statistically the highest. Two in five. Stéphane Grabli is named for his work on The Irishman (with Pablo Helman, Leandro Estebecorena and Nelson Sepulveda-Fauser) and Guillaume Rocheron is appointed for 1917 (alongside Greg Butler and Dominic Tuohy). The two competitors will however face two blockbusters: the latest "Avengers" and the live action version of Disney's Lion King .
