- George Steiner: the wise survivor
Professor, philosopher and literature critic George Steiner has died this Monday at age 90 in Cambridge (United Kingdom), as confirmed by the son of this writer and humanist of Jewish origin to The New York Times.
Steiner, Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities in 2001, is one of the most recognized scholars of European culture and is also considered the benchmark of literary criticism in the second half of the century.
Born in 1929 in Paris and in 1940 his family went into exile in the United States, where he continued his studies at the French Lyceum in New York and later at the universities of Chicago and Harvard.
His vocation is oriented early towards literature and philosophy. He is a professor at Cambridge and Geneva and author of one of the most unique and interdisciplinary works of contemporary thought.
He has taught at the American universities of Stanford, New York and Princeton, although his academic career has developed mainly in Geneva and England. In addition, he has participated in numerous university debates in Europe and North America.
It has numerous books published as 'The Death of Tragedy', 'Language and Silence', 'Errata, a Life Examined', 'After Babel', 'Antigons' or 'Real Presences'.
In his work he analyzes the impact that the humanities, artistic creation and scientific knowledge have on the configuration of the human spirit.
