Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbàn is participating this Tuesday, February 4, in an international meeting in Rome, co-organized by the Edmund Burke Foundation and the association Nazione Futura, very close to the nationalist parties in Italy.

Publicity

from our correspondent in Rome,

This gathering is titled " God, Honor and Fatherland - President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II and the Freedom of the Nations ". An entire program ! But the meeting will be less crisp than expected because the boss of the Northern League, Matteo Salvini paraded at the last minute without explaining the reasons. And Georgia Meloni, leader of the postfascist party Fratelli d'Italia, was content to inaugurate, this Monday evening, the conference at the Plaza Hotel in Rome. She will fly to Washington this morning to participate in the national prayer breakfast, the Republican Party meeting in the presence of Donald Trump.

Among the other stars announced, Victor Orban is already in Rome. Just like Marion Maréchal Le Pen. We can also cite the presence of the British writer Douglas Murray and that of the Israeli political scientist, Yoram Hazony, author of a work which has gone around the world: " The virtue of nationalism ".

The alliance of nationalists in Europe is not for tomorrow

Two key figures in this movement are missing. Georgia Meloni said that there was no friction between her party and that of Salvini, but that it was important for each force to grow, apart from the right-wing coalition to which Forza Italia also belongs. This suggests disagreements, especially between Georgia the little rising star and Salvini the big loser in the recent regional elections in Emilia-Romagna.

As for the Hungarian Prime Minister, it is difficult to decipher his objectives. This Monday, he was received by the President of the Council, Giuseppe Conte, an interview at the Chigi Palace very discreet. In addition, Viktor Orban will have lunch this Tuesday noon with Silvio Berlusconi who would like to convince him to stay in the family of the EPP. remember that Fidesz, his party, has been suspended since 2019 from the European People's Party (EPP) for having undermined democracy and the rule of law, so the presence of its leader at this ultra-right-wing rally could accelerate the expulsion. But what risks not being digested are these frequentations, more assiduous, with the Italian far right, not to mention Marion Maréchal who embodies the new face of the French nationalist right.

A gathering overshadowed by the coronavirus

This meeting did not make the headlines this morning in the newspapers or on the radio, very focused on the coronavirus and the consequences of the epidemic. It should be noted that the doors of the Plaza Hotel are not open to all the press, on the pretext that there are not enough places, and that no program of interventions has been officially published. What makes the whole very opaque. At least for the moment.
