Pear and apple trees, as well as field beech or black elderberry. No less than 24 species will be present in the first urban micro-forest of Toulouse which will emerge on March 2 in the Rangueil district.

To create this cool island in the heart of the city, you don't need to have hundreds of hectares. A municipal plot of 400 m2 has already been identified and will be able to accommodate 1,200 trees of native species, present in the region long before the arrival of humans. They will be planted by citizens, but also 6 ° middle school students, just to educate the youngest.

While global warming is on everyone's lips, this project was launched by citizens, inspired by the Miyawaki method, named after a Japanese botanist, which makes it possible to plant 300 trees on the equivalent of six parking spaces.

“We started with the first greening actions in the city during the 48 hours of urban agriculture. We then identified the subject of micro-forests and we responded this summer to a call for projects from the mainland, ”says Grégory Guedon for the Micro-forests of Toulouse en Transition collective.

Spread the method

After months of waiting, their project has just been awarded, removing the last obstacles to the realization of the first Toulouse micro-forest. “Micro-forests are natural air conditioners and have the advantage of being able to be carried out on very small plots. We are going to organize a training day open to the officials of the green spaces of the town hall, the region and the department before the plantation of the forest, because our objective is to spread this idea ", continues the environmental activist who imagines a belt well green around the Toulouse ring road.

Because in addition to cooling the air and bringing biodiversity back to the city, their trees have the advantage of capturing CO2 and thus fighting pollution. And they grow ten times faster than a conventional forest.

So that other citizens and communities can invest in other projects on the city and perpetuate these projects, the collective is now in the running for the call for projects from the participative budget of the Occitania region. If selected, it will finance a training and support kit for the creation of micro-forests, the Miyawa'kit. It's up to you to vote.
