They were to be the first animals in captivity to find their natural environment. On Thursday, 55 gray parrots from Gabon were seized at the Pont-Scorff zoo (Morbihan), recently acquired by Rewild and several animal welfare associations. In a press release, Rewild denounces an "illegal" seizure and criticizes the attitude of the French Office for Biodiversity which piloted the operation.

According to the association, which acquired the zoo six weeks ago thanks to a surge of solidarity, the environmental police intervened "in defiance of the law, the operation having been based on fallacious grounds ". The authorities considered that the transport procedure had not been followed. Difficult to be certain as the case is complex.

We will use all avenues of appeal to challenge an improper seizure.

The animals had been seized by Bulgarian and Hungarian authorities who had arrested German traffickers. The parrots were then taken care of in England, before arriving in France and then being welcomed in the Morbihan.

On Thursday, they were finally sent back to England, on the eve of Brexit, which further complicates the transfer. "Rewild is the subject of a number of controls and formal notices bordering on harassment," said the association.

In December, she bought the Pont-Scorff zoo, in order to use it as a “rehabilitation center to welcome animals from the traffic before reintroducing them into their natural environment”. Journalist Hugo Clément had largely contributed to the success of the operation.
