  • Today, “Les corps conjugal” by Sophie de Baere, published on January 22, 2020 by Éditions JC Lattès

Amandine Roulland, contributor to the reading group "20 Minutes Books" and blogger, recommends Les Corps conjugales by Sophie de Baere, published on January 22, 2020 by Éditions JC Lattès.

His favorite quote:

“For a time, she revered the maternal spirit of her youngest daughter, admired this woman, barely thirty years old, who had chosen to lose everything to protect her family from infamy. "

Why this book?

  • Because in this puzzle to be reconstructed, what matters are the damaged little bits. A family secret revealed and the children drink.
  • Because Sophie de Baere, like Maupassant in her time, made an incredible story at the outset, life sketches.
  • Because the writing, like the work of the seamstress's grandmother of the novel, is perfect. We can look backwards and everything matches.
  • Because the author speaks of a woman of flesh and blood and not only of a spirit.

The essential in 2 minutes

The plot. Eighteen years old, Alizia fled her campaign to go to Paris. Build a new life, believe that love can change everything. Even have a beautiful baby. But then, mom teaches him a heavy secret and Alizia disappears.

Characters. Surrounded by the mentally handicapped little brother and a transparent sister, Alizia plays the Miss at the Foire de Bolbec to please solo mom. Then there is only the look on her of Jean that counts. So why a few days after their marriage, the beautiful is doing the trunk?

Places. The greyness of childhood in Bolbec contrasts with the dream life in Parisian pink. But suddenly a touch of black turns everything to blood red.

The time. Nowadays, when there are still class differences.

The author. Sophie de Baere teaches in Nice. She is also an author and composer of French songs.

This book was read with the emotion of finding Bolbec, a city much less gray for me than in this novel.
