These new look electric buses will soon circulate in Marseille. - Metropolitan transport authority

The objective is ambitious. RTM hopes that 100% of the buses that will circulate in 2035 in the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis will be electric. The Régie des transports métropolitains presented this Wednesday in Marseille, five new models that will circulate this year. Fifteen buses were ordered from five different manufacturers.

They cost around 12 million euros, 50% funded by the Departmental Council, says La Provence . The full switch to electric will, logically, be very expensive, since it will be necessary to buy between 30 to 50 new vehicles per year, build the charging infrastructure and, at the half-life of buses, renew their batteries. To facilitate this transition period, RTM is also acquiring 79 hybrid buses (diesel-electricity), which will be put into circulation this year.

More than 600 buses run today in the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis. Marseille is one of the first cities in France, along with Paris, Nice and Gaillac, to have inaugurated a 100% electric line. It has been running since 2016.
