A butchered dolphin was found lying on the pebble beach of Plovan (Finistère) just days after a similar discovery a few kilometers away. "It's been a very long time since we've had this: two dolphins butchered and found back to back ten days apart," said Bernard Martin, correspondent for Audierne Bay in the National Stranding Network ( RNE), the main tool for monitoring strandings of marine mammals.

The stranding of the dolphin was reported by a walker at the Océanopolis marine park in Brest. "Skinning is a marginal practice but which still exists and which is reprehensible because it is prohibited," explained Sami Hassani, head of the marine mammals service at Océanopolis. Cetaceans are protected species in Europe. On January 12, another dolphin, also skinned, had been found on a beach in La Torche, about ten kilometers as the crow flies from Plovan.

Sea Sheperd publishes a shocking video on social networks

A few days later, on January 21, the NGO Sea Shepherd had published a video, dating from "three or four years ago", showing French fishermen butchering a dolphin on board a boat to to take the meat, an act that had denounced the professional federation of fishermen and the authorities.

"This practice is scandalous and cannot be tolerated," reacted Thursday the National Committee for Marine Fisheries and Marine Breeding (CNPMEM), demanding "a thorough investigation" to identify those responsible.
