For several years, Nutella has been severely criticized for its use of palm oil, the production and exploitation of which promote deforestation. Faced with this situation, Ferrero, which manufactures the famous spread, decided to react by changing its policy around this product.

Result: the company comes first in a ranking established by the World Wide Fund (WWF). The NGO has classified 173 large companies according to the efforts they have put in place to sustainably source palm oil, reports Le Figaro .

Technology at the service of ethics

In total, Ferrero obtained a score of 21.5 out of 22 on the scoring grid developed by WWF based on different criteria. For the NGO, this is an "encouraging signal for the rest of the industry", which proves that "sustainable palm oil production without deforestation is possible".

For its part, Ferrero explained that it uses technology based on satellite images "to ensure that [its] suppliers respect [its] commitments in terms of non-deforestation". By the end of 2020, the producer of Nutella wants 100% of the palm oil used to be traceable. The stakes are high for the company: each year, it purchases nearly 200,000 tonnes of palm oil, or 0.3% of world production.
