Hope for dromedaries? In Feignies, in the North, Julien Job is saddened by the fate of the Australian camelids. For several days, the Australian government has announced the slaughter of 10,000 dromedaries, responsible for it, of an ecological disaster in the country.

Introduced in the 19th century by Europeans, the animal is accused of
threaten the rare water points of isolated populations on the edge of the Australian desert. To date, nearly 5,000 dromedaries, considered harmful, have already been killed.

Bring 200 dromedaries back to the North

At the head of the association "La Camélerie", Julien Job plans to bring 200 of these animals back to his center, which also hosts horses, donkeys, zebus and yaks. To do this, the Northerner launched a kitty on social networks.

The money collected must be used to pay for transport because the breeder wishes to repatriate these Australian dromedaries by plane. A budget is also planned to finance the capture of animals and the adaptation of buildings in the northern center. A pot that fills shyly but Julien Job does not despair.

Adaptation time

This camel lover wishes to save them, but he also wants to make them known to the general public through activities such as oriental evenings, visits or even walks. "The idea is to put them back in an agricultural space, but the project goes further than saving animals," he explains to 20 Minutes .

Considered a domestic animal, the dromedary can be imported into France provided that certain regulations are observed. The animal must indeed be microchipped and registered in order to have traceability. European standards also require that his state of health be verified. In the event of illness, the animal will be placed in quarantine until it is healthy. Adaptation time will also be necessary for these animals used to hot weather. "Their metabolism has to get used to," notes Julien Job. This transition takes place over six months.

"The dromedary is not a pest"

For Julien Job, "the dromedary is not a harmful animal". “In France, it responds to the demand for an eco-responsible activity. Contrary to what the Australians think, he considers that "the animal represents a low carbon footprint and feeds on what the cows refuse, like thistle or brambles".

In addition, it needs little space. “On a hectare where you can put two cows, you can install thirty dromedaries. In Australia, there are a million wandering in the desert.
