- Yesterday there were so many emotions, it is only today that I understand what happened, but this is a very important prize for me, says Levan Gelbakhiani, who is praised for her very first film role.

The film about Merab (Levan Gelbakhiani) and Irakli (Bachi Valishvili), who find each other in the traditional and strictly hierarchical Georgian dance world, has aroused strong reactions. In Georgia, the film premiere was shaken by protests and nationalist forces in the country calling it "sodomy propaganda".

First refused to the role because of fear

The security requirement for being able to make a movie about love between two men has been extensive and the risks many. And first, the yellowbag award-winning protagonist declined to the role.

- Probably because of the social climate and fear. I discussed a lot with my friends and family, they said, "if you want to do it, just do it". When I got that support, I thought it might still be an opportunity and my family won't hate me, says Levan Gelbakhiani.

"I didn't even regret when my friend got beaten at the premiere"

His opponent Bachi Valishvili agrees:

- To say no to such an opportunity because of the risk of something happening would have been irresponsible. I didn't even regret when my friend was beaten with a phone at the premiere!

The friend who was on her way to the premiere show had a phone thrown so hard against her head that she had to be taken to hospital.

- It made me feel responsible and worried, after all, it's our movie that caused so much turmoil, says Bachi Valishvili.

The anger has ebbed out

Despite the security risks and protests, both actors believe it has been worth it and that the anger towards the film has ebbed out after all.

- I think we have opened many doors with this film. I got several messages on social media from people who heard about them and told me that they finally felt they could be themselves, says Levan Gelbakhiani.
