"A beautiful man, a legend, a poet composer." With an emotional message on Facebook, American singer Amy Rigby has fired her colleague singer-songwriter David Olney , who fell dead from a heart attack last Saturday on stage during a concert in Florida. "I was sitting next to him, an honor, and I really wanted to sing with him and Scott Miller," Rigby says, "Olney was in the middle of his third song when he stopped, apologized and closed his eyes."

"He was very still, sitting upright with the guitar hanging, with his hat and with a beautiful rusty suede jacket that we laughed at because a hellish rain was falling outside the place where we were playing," recalls the singer.

A key member of the Nashville music community since moving to Music City in 1973, the native of Lincoln, Rhode Island , was "a compelling and enigmatic presence," describes the epitaph of his website. "He wrote sonnets and starred in the Nashville Shakespeare Festival , and their live concerts mixed tenderness and ferocity, theater and sincerity, agitation and hug."

As a composer, David Olney wrote songs for performers such as Emmylou Harris , Linda Ronstadt or Laurie Lewis .
