  • An apparently satisfied future mother begins to swallow objects that are not edible.

A loving husband, a beautiful house and soon a baby… Hunter, played by the sublime Haley Bennett seen in La Fille du train , has everything to be happy. However, the heroine of Swallow contracts a strange disease which pushes her to ingest the most amazing objects.

"Hunter has always lived by following the codes imposed on him by society," says director Carlo Mirabella-Davis at 20 Minutes . She feels like she is in control of her life when she swallows something that is not edible. »Thumbtack, earth, ball, pile ... all of this disappears successively in the throat of the beautiful. The role earned its performer an award at Tribeca while the film received the 45th Deauville Festival award.

Eating disorder

It was after discovering the existence of Pica's Disease that the director embarked on this first fiction feature film. Carlo Mirabella-Davis has carried out extensive research into this astonishing eating disorder behind which the heroine hides a terrible trauma. "I was fascinated to see what people are capable of ingesting," he admits. And this is what inspired me the character of this woman who hides a deep depression under the appearance of a model wife. He met many patients to try to understand their motivations.

Inside

“I quickly understood that people with this disease call for help because they feel oppressed, insists Carlo Mirabella-Davis. This is the case for my heroine who does not manage to externalize her discomfort and therefore acts from the inside. "He makes perfectly clear the confinement that this" desperate housewife "undergoes, forced to comply with the demands of those around him. His relatives also take his metamorphosis very badly and show themselves totally incapable of helping him.

This film is one of the most feminist I have seen. It is the image of what it is to take control of your life, and how radical and universal it is a feeling.
For me there are Air Doll and Swallow in two different registers but of the same force https://t.co/pkfvmrwbtI

Helping the sick

Carlo Mirabella-Davis hopes that Swallow will make Pica disease better known. "Talking about this kind of ailment through fiction could make some people understand that they are not the only ones suffering from it and encourage them to seek treatment," he says. Regardless of this generous goal, Swallow manages to thrill the viewer for the beautiful portrait, disturbing and invigorating, of a woman during her quest for freedom.
