A Corsica Ferries ferry in the port of Nice - Syspeo / Sipa

  • In Nice, Corsica Ferries has just committed to using only fuel with a 0.1% maximum sulfur content.
  • All cruise lines that will park in Cannes Bay in 2020 have made the same commitment.
  • These initiatives take place before the setting up off the coast of the Côte d'Azur of a possible "Ship Emission Control Zone" which provides for the same rate.

Nice, "Europe's third most polluted urban port with sulfur" ... They no longer want this worrying list of achievements from the European Transport and Environment organization.

On Thursday, the company Corsica Ferries made a commitment to the metropolis Nice Côte d'Azur and the CCI to use only fuel with 0.1% sulfur content as of Saturday January near the coast. "The port of Nice will do better than national standards", which since the passage in 2020 impose a maximum rate of 0.5%, said Christian Estrosi, the president of the community.

Pending a "Ship Emission Control Area"

An advertisement which crossed another one for the health of the Azureans. Cannes city hall also said on Thursday that all cruise lines that had planned a stopover in its bay in 2020 had ratified its charter, launched last summer. This text also obliges to use only sulfur fuel maximum 0.1%.

These initiatives, already beyond the legislation, take place before the establishment off the coast of the Riviera of a possible "Ship Emission Control Zone" (ECA, according to the nomenclature of the International Maritime Organization). Already implemented in the English Channel, the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, this system provides for this lowest rate. But "the creation of an ECA zone in the Mediterranean is not planned before 2022", underlines Christian Estrosi, who thus assures that he wanted to go "faster".

Electrical connections for mega yachts

"This early transition to 0.1% is a strong marker," said Pierre Mattei, CEO of Corsica Ferries, visiting Thursday in Nice for the occasion. If the company has embarked on this path for “the reduction of [its] environmental footprint”, it is because it “studies the most suitable solutions for each port and in particular where the dock connection is not not yet possible today like in Nice ”.

This possibility, which allows stationary ships to do without their engine using electricity, is not a good option "for ferries that are there less than two hours", advance the metropolis. "On the other hand, this possibility will be offered to mega yachts, which will stay longer, from 2021", further assures the community.
