Deadly torrents of rain. Forty-one people were killed by torrential rain that hit Angola in less than 24 hours earlier this week, authorities said on Thursday.
"The bad weather between midnight Sunday and 4 p.m. Monday left a total of 41 dead," said Interior Minister Eugenio Laborinho at a press conference in Luanda.
12,000 victims
Almost 12,000 people are affected by the heavy rains, which "have caused floods, the destruction of infrastructure and plantations," according to the Interior Ministry. The rains notably destroyed 378 houses and 12 churches, caused serious damage in more than 2,000 homes and damaged four bridges in twelve of the eighteen provinces of the Angolan territory.
They also caused power outages and disrupted communications. The rains come after a year of "unprecedented drought" in southern Angola, which has claimed the lives of more than 30,000 head of cattle, officials said.
