La Seiche river, here in Janzé (Ille-et-Vilaine), September 20, 2017, one month after the pollution of Lactalis. - C. Allain / 20 Minutes

The ecological damage assessment will wait. The hearing of the Lactalis group for the cuttlefish pollution scheduled for Friday will be postponed, at the request of several lawyers. Engaged against the pension reform project, the bars of Rennes and Vannes voted to dismiss all cases this week. The dairy giant's trial will be no exception.

Lactalis had already been sentenced to a 250,000 euro fine and 70,000 compensation in June for having polluted the Cuttlefish due to a release of lactose at its Retiers plant (Ille-et-Vilaine). Eight kilometers of the river had been affected and tons of fish had been suffocated. The court ruled that "the pollution of the Cuttlefish was the direct consequence of the inaction of the dairy company". The investigation had questioned the dysfunctions of the treatment plant. "The managers and employees had been informed of the two technical incidents resulting in the release of organic matter from the treatment plant," said the court.

Unprecedented legal proceedings

This Friday, it is on the ecological damage that the dairy empire of Emmanuel Besnier was to be judged. Taking advantage of a law promulgated in 2016 but never used until now, the associations had obtained from Lactalis that it conducts ecological compensation actions to repair the damaged aquatic environment.

The hearing was to assess the work carried out in consultation with the prefecture and to assess whether additional funding could be requested. "Even without the strike movement, I think the hearing would have been postponed," said Thomas Dubreuil, who defends the Ille-et-Vilaine fishing federation. “We did not receive any information from Lactalis on the quantification of the damage. It is in their interest to drag out the procedure, ”adds the Vannes Bar Council. The date of the new hearing will be known on Friday.
