Haute-Marne is moving into high gear. This Thursday, motorists will again see speed limit signs at 90 km / h on certain departmental roads. President LR of the departmental council, Nicolas Lacroix, announced Wednesday the abandonment of 80 km / h on certain sections.

This return to 90 km / h, the first in France according to him, concerns the first 200 km of a program which will cover in all, by the end of the week, 476 km of departmental roads, mostly national roads . "It is the structuring network of the department which concentrates 85% of the traffic", explained Nicolas Lacroix, stressing that vigilance messages such as "For your safety, respect the speed" will also be installed alongside the speed limit signs .

Concrete blocks placed in the summer

The elected Haut-Marne did not wait for the advisory opinion of the departmental road safety commission which met this Wednesday in Chaumont to announce its decision, and recalls having submitted to the administration the compulsory accident report. By summer 2019, the technical teams of the department had poured the concrete studs intended to receive the panels. "This return to 90 km / ha costs around 100,000 euros," says Nicolas Lacroix. "This investment will last a long time and does not weigh much compared to the 30 million euros of our road budget, much of which is spent on road maintenance," he adds.

The president of the departmental council denies having taken a populist decision in a department where the movement of "yellow vests" had been particularly active. “Here, the car is life. Losing your license is risking losing your job ”, he justifies all the more since“ in the department, we have not seen any improvement in terms of accidentology since the return to 80 km / h ".
