The two pesticides have never been available in products marketed in France, and they will no longer have the opportunity to become so: a decree published on December 31 in the Official Journal prohibits them from January 1, to protect bees .

The two substances concerned, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor, are considered to be new generation neonicotinoids, the prohibition of which is provided for by the Egalim Food Law.

Appeared in the 1990s and which have become the most widely used insecticides in the world, neonicotinoids attack the nervous system of insects, and therefore pollinators. Even at low doses, bees and bumblebees are disoriented, no longer find their hive, the sperm of the males is damaged…

An expected decision

This ban follows the September 2018 ban on five neonicotinoids (clothianidin, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, thiacloprid and acetamiprid). In early December 2019, the courts, seized by environmental defense associations, had suspended and then prohibited in early December the sale of two sulfoxaflor products from the American manufacturer Dow AgroSciences (Corteva).

The French Health Security Agency (ANSES), which had given authorization in 2017 to market these two products, had decided not to contest the decision, citing the next ban on the two "new" neonicotinoids.
