The monkeys at the Krefeld zoo in Germany were killed in the fire in their shelter on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the zoo management announced. "Our worst fears have come true," wrote the zoo on Wednesday on its Facebook page.

A fire ravaged the zoo's monkey house shortly after midnight. It notably housed orangutans, marmosets and chimpanzees.

Employees "in shock"

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other zoo buildings. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The zoo will remain closed for the time being, the employees being "in shock" after this "appalling tragedy", according to management.
