French designer of Italian origin Emanuel Ungaro died Saturday in Paris at 86 years of age , his family reported Sunday.

The health of the creator, who had left the fashion world in 2004, had "weakened" two years ago, a family source said.

Born on February 13, 1933 in Aix-en-Provence, in southern France, in a family that emigrated from Italy, Ungaro settled in Paris in 1956 , at age 22, where he was a disciple of the Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, which he described as "master with capital letters" in the art of pattern making.

Son, grandson, nephew of Italian tailors from Brindisi emigrated in Provence, gave his first stitch with six years. With 25 he opened his first sewing house .
