Yamanote Line New Station “Takanawa Gateway” will open on March 14 next year at 15:22 on December 13

JR Yamanote Line's “Takanawa Gateway Station”, the first new station in about half a century, will open on March 14 next year.

Takanawa Gateway Station is being constructed between Shinagawa Station and Tamachi Station, and is the 30th station on the Yamanote Line since Nishi-Nippori Station in 1971.

JR East announced on March 13 that the opening date of the new station will be March 14 next year in line with the schedule revision next spring.

The station building of the new station has been almost completed for the opening of the building, and the premises have become an open structure, which is unusual for a railway station building, with the atrium from the platform and the ticket gate floor to the ceiling.

On November 16th, a large-scale track switching work was completed for the start of operation, and the Yamanote Line has already been operated on a new route that passes through the Takanawa Gateway Station under construction.

On the other hand, JR East plans to redevelop the surrounding area centering on the new station, including 45 floors above ground with housing for foreigners, cultural facilities with 173 meters high buildings and halls, and a station square. Construction is planned, with the goal of full-scale opening around 2024.

How the new station was established

It was June 2014 that JR East announced that it would install a new Yamanote Line station between Shinagawa Station and Tamachi Station.

The place where the new station was installed was originally a JR East rolling stock base covering approximately 130,000 square meters.

Vehicles on the Tokaido Line were stopped at this depot, but the vehicles were moved to Saitama Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, etc. according to the “Ueno Tokyo Line” plan with Tokaido Line, Utsunomiya Line, Takasaki Line, etc. It is possible to disperse to the bases.

As a result, the vehicle base was abolished / reduced to create a space for new station construction and large-scale redevelopment.

In February 2017, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new station was held, and the construction of the station building designed by architect Kengo Kuma has been underway.

And last December, the name of the new station was decided to be “Takanawa Gateway”.

Takanawa Gateway Station will open in the spring of next year, with approximately 9.5 hectares of land centered on the redevelopment station, 45 floors above ground with housing for foreigners, and 173 meters high buildings and halls Construction of cultural facilities and a station square is planned, and JR East is aiming for full-scale operation in FY2024.
