• Defense: Donald Trump prepares the US for a "galactic" war

For the first time in 72 years, when, after World War II , the United States created the Air Force as an independent weapon within the Armed Forces of that country, Washington has created a new weapon: the Space Force . Its mission is to design and execute military operations on a battlefield in which not only has there never been an armed conflict, but in which any form of life is impossible: outer space.

The United States, thus, becomes the only country in the world to have an Armed Forces Weapon dedicated solely and exclusively to space. But, paradoxically, he is not the first to do so.

In 1992 Russia created its own Space Force, which had an erratic existence, with different organizations and periods in which it ceased to exist, until in 2015 it was merged with the Air Force to constitute the current Aerospace Force of that country.

Now the Space Force becomes the sixth weapon of the United States, along with the Army , the Navy , the Air Force , the Marine Corps (the 'Marines') and the Coast Guard .

The constitution of these organizations has always been marked by bureaucratic tensions. In fact, the 'Marines' have been about to disappear several times. If they have not done so, it is because of their formidable spirit, and because of the support they have among public opinion. An endorsement that, for its rivals - especially in the Army - is more the result of an effective image and public communication campaign. the 'marines', in fact, are subject to the secretary of the Navy. The Space Force will also be submitted to the Department of the Air Force.

US President Donald Trump shows his signature on the directive on the creation of the Space Force, last February. NICHOLAS KAMM

A personal commitment of Donald Trump

The creation of the Space Force, first raised by Donald Trump in 2017, was initially taken as a joke by many, for whom the administrative and institutional effort of the measure in a country with a public deficit of 5 did not make sense, 5% of GDP. However, Trump has managed to take the cat to the water, largely because of his voters' support for the initiative.

In principle, the main objective of the new Weapon will be to assume control of a large part of the assets they have in space - from satellites to communications systems - the other Weapons and, later, to develop a strategy and equipment purchase systems. The Commander of Space Operations shall be a full member of the Board of Chiefs of Staff .

It will not be an easy task because of bureaucratic resistance. After all, there is the response of the General of the Air Force, Curtis LeMay , the man who created the current system of strategic US bombers in the fifties and sixties. When he heard a subordinate refer to the Soviet Union as "our enemy," LeMay replied: "The Navy is our enemy; the Soviet Union is our rival."

A base in the 'Bible belt'

Congress has decided that the new Weapon be small and has only given it 65 million euros in budget for its first year of existence. Civil organizations such as the famous NASA and the Administration for the Ocean and the Atmosphere (NOAA, according to its acronym in English) will not depend on the new weapon, whose objective is "to ensure the supremacy of the US in space." That is, "so on earth as in heaven."

The headquarters of the Space Force will be at the immense base of the Schriever Air Force, in the town of Colorado Springs , in the southern state of Colorado. It is a gigantic base even for the US. It is located in a very conservative area, in what constitutes the west end of the so-called "belt of the Bible", a region, as the name implies, extremely religious.

The main source of economic activity in Colorado Springs is the State, in the form of investments in the half-dozen bases that surround the city. The second is the publishers of religious books. Colorado Springs is in an impressive place, as it is there where the Rocky Mountains rise in the middle of the vast meadow. In fact, from the city you can drive to one of the highest mountains in the US: Pikes Peak , of 4,302 meters.

But the approval by the House of Representatives of the creation of the Space Force also reveals what the US priorities are, because it comes just a week after that country adopts a regulation that will leave 688,009 people unable to use coupons provided by the Government to buy food In the United States, 37 million people depend on public assistance to buy food.
