  • 'United after science'. Greta Thunberg, at the Climate Summit in Madrid: "We have to educate adults about the climate"

Each new appearance of the activist Greta Thunberg grabs all eyes and fills the forum in which she intervenes. His participation this morning in the plenary of the Climate Summit, in an act at the highest level and accompanied by several authorities, was no exception.

"We no longer have time to ignore science," said the young Swedish woman, in a speech much more content than the one she delivered last September at the New York Summit. The bottom line, however, was the same: "Nothing is being done , " he repeated.

Thunberg, in fact, started his speech pointing out that he did not intend to make great headlines, remembering his already famous phrases "how dare you" or "our house is burning". "That is the only thing that is remembered," he argued, while, on this occasion, he tried to focus on "science."

"People are dying from the climate crisis," said the activist, and recalled the rise in temperatures and the melting of polar ice caps: "This is what I want to focus on." "Please tell me how these things are counted without showing a whit of panic," he asked the audience. "I would really like to know."

"It seems that (the summit) has become an opportunity for countries to avoid increasing their ambitions." Countries are finding "smart ways" not to reduce emissions, Thunberg said. "The real danger is that politicians and CEOs make it appear that actions are taking place, when, in reality, nothing is being done," he added.

"There is no sense of urgency. Our leaders do not behave as if there is a crisis," he continued, and compared the climate crisis with "a child in the middle of the road" about to be run over. "The risk is doing nothing, which is where we are now."

"There is hope"

"We are desperate for any sign of hope. There is hope, I have seen it , but it does not come from governments or corporations, it comes from people," he said. "It is public opinion that governs the free world. In fact, every change in history has come from the people. We cannot wait, we must make the change now. We, the people."

Chilean scientist Gonzalo Muñoz , named high-level champion of the Climate Summit , opened the event with a clear message and references to the demonstration that traveled through the center of Madrid last Friday: "This is not speculation," he said. "We are facing a climate crisis."

Johan Rockström , director of the Postdam Institute for Climate Studies , said that we are facing a "risk scenario" and recalled that in 2019 there have been numerous extreme weather events, while "global emissions (of greenhouse gases) continued increasing".

Teresa Ribera, Spanish minister for the Ecological Transition, said that the expression "climatic emergency" has been "the most popular of this year", which shows "social concern about the lack of action". "I think there is no doubt about science, there is no doubt about what we should do," he argued. "It is no longer a matter of ambition, but of necessity. We need to act," he added.

On his sixth day in Madrid, the city he reached via Lisbon after crossing the Atlantic by catamaran, the young Swedish again recorded his media pull. The event in which he participated grabbed all the attention at the start of this penultimate day of the summit, of which no concrete results are yet known.

"Anyone who wants to approach the stage, who feels free to do so," announced a member of the organization before starting the event. Indeed, dozens of people who filled the room did so instantly, while Teresa Ribera took out her cell phone to take a selfie with Thunberg.
