Audrey Mash , a 34-year-old British woman who has been living in Barcelona for two years, was resurrected after being in cardiac arrest for more than six hours after suffering severe hypothermia on November 3, when she was surprised by a storm while crossing the Pyrenees

The firefighters who rescued her unconscious, in cardiac arrest and with a body temperature of only 18 degrees, and the doctors who attended her have explained this case on Thursday, which is the only one documented in Spain.

The doctor of the Intensive Medicine Service of the Vall d'Hebron Hospital Eduard Argudo explained that in view of the severity in which the woman arrived, they decided to apply the ECMO device for the first time in a case of severe hypothermia, which allows the cardiac function to be replaced by through a system that oxygenates the blood outside the body and returns it to the body after controlling its temperature with a water circuit.

With this system, the heart beat again after more than six hours without any sequelae left to the patient, who today thanked the work of the professionals who saved her life: "It seemed like a miracle."
