Instagram has announced that it will require its new users to specify their date of birth.

The new measure targets younger users, while the app currently requires users to state that they are at least 13 years old.

Policy changes may affect the adoption of child safety rules and data privacy, while lawmakers and family safety groups in the United States, Britain and elsewhere criticize the application for exposing children to inappropriate material.

The date of birth is Instagram's latest step to abandon long-standing principles such as anonymity or nickname.
