New “calculation table” for child support after divorce announced by the Supreme Court on November 21, 4:23

The Supreme Court will update the “Calculation Table” used when deciding the child support that parents who raise children after divorce receive and will publish next month. Depending on the current social situation, there may be cases where the amount increases depending on the conditions.

In calculating child support after divorce, a group of judges in Tokyo and Osaka created and published a calculation table for quick decision in 2001 and used in courts.

In the current calculation table, for example, if a parent raising one child from 0 to 14 years old has an annual income of 3 million yen and the other person has an annual income of 5 million yen, the childcare fee will be 20,000 yen to 40,000 yen a month. The amount of money can be derived mechanically from the number of children and the age of both children.

At the Supreme Court's judicial training center, the social situation has changed from the time when the current calculation table was made, so we decided to update it and have been considering it since July last year.

The new calculation table may take into account changes in social conditions such as household consumption trends, and may increase depending on conditions such as annual income.

The Supreme Court plans to publish a new calculation table on the 23rd of next month and will post it on the court website.
