Research on Aichi's test site, etc., without catching insects on “Zebra” -patterned cattle 13:20 on November 15

The Aichi Prefectural Agricultural Research Center has compiled the results of research that, when applied to black cattle with white paint to make a zebra-like pattern, insects such as abu will not come closer compared to normal cattle .

Aichi Prefectural Agricultural Research Center in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture has conducted joint research with Kyoto University in order to verify whether research results compiled by overseas researchers can be applied even to cattle, as “the insects do not come close to zebras”. It was.

According to the announcement, in research, black cows were painted in the normal state and white paint with a black and white striped pattern like `` Zebra '', and in order to see the difference depending on the color, the black of the same material as the white paint We connected to the fence in a striped pattern using paint and examined the number of times insects approached.

As a result, the number of insects that suck blood such as abs that had adhered to the right half of the cow after leaving it 36 times for 30 minutes each averaged 129 cows in the normal state, with black paint The number of black and white striped cattle was 55, which was less than half.

In addition, the average number of actions to drive away insects, such as waving the tail, was 53 times for normal cows and 54 times for black-painted cows on average per 30 minutes. This means that the number of Noshima-patterned cows was 39.

Based on the results of this research, Aichi Prefecture made black-haired cows look like zebras to prevent insect-borne infections and reduce cattle stress caused by insects sucking blood. It is expected to be effective.

In addition, Aichi Prefecture sees the possibility of applying this research result to livestock other than cattle, and has a policy of promoting research into practical use, such as a technique for leaving striped patterns for a long period of time.
