Nankai Trough Evaluation Study Group “No special change, but prepare for earthquakes” November 8, 19:18

A regular study meeting was held to evaluate the possibility of a huge earthquake in the Nankai Trough, and the opinion that “no particular change was observed” was compiled.

On the 8th, an expert review meeting held at the Japan Meteorological Agency analyzed data from the last month observed in and around the hypocenter.

During this period, there was no noticeable seismic activity around the Nankai Trough.

In addition, there was no conspicuous activity that seems to be related to “slow slip” in which the plate boundary slowly moves deep in the hypocenter region.

Changes in ground subsidence have been observed at Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture, Shionomisaki in Wakayama Prefecture, and Murotomisaki in Kochi Prefecture. This seems to be a change due to the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate, and there has been no trend or significant change so far. .

For this reason, the study group summarized the opinion that “there is no particular change observed that the possibility of a huge earthquake has increased relative to normal”.

Nao Hirata, Chairman of the Evaluation Review Committee and Prof. Naohiro Hirata of the University of Tokyo Earthquake Research Institute, said, “As the long-term crustal movements clearly show, the Philippine Sea plate is sinking and it is not unusual for an earthquake to occur at normal times. We don't have any positive data on the occurrence of a huge earthquake in the near future, but we want you to continue to be prepared for the earthquake. "
