The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has taken a step, perhaps even in time, for Spanish to open its way as a tool in artificial intelligence , as well as in the engineering that allows the daily use of social networks.
The LEIA program (Spanish language and Artificial Intelligence) is the beginning of a path that Friday committed to travel together the 23 language academies with, to start, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Telephone, Amazon and Microsoft for proper use from Spanish.
The agreement, which was announced in the presence of the Kings of Spain and as the end of the XVI Congress of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language, marks an objective that the Academy brings "300 years of work, from dictionaries to the track that gives about its use the two million daily consultations " online , as its director Santiago Muñoz Machado said.
"We don't even know the dimensions of the challenge," he admitted, "but we want to be there." That current point places English as the axis of artificial intelligence. The director of the SAR said that " words of our lexicon disappear by the correction machines , which underline words that are in the dictionary" but users stop using them.
Muñoz Machado warned that, if there are 580 million Spanish-speaking people, the machines already add up to 700 million who "speak as their builder implies." The challenge is that they do not break the unity of the language, "a linguistic and ethical challenge, that we deteriorate the best of our culture, what unites us".
Telefónica was the first corporation to join, but the director of the SAR stressed that LEIA is a project open to companies and administrations.
