Ariana Grande was the artist who had the most prize chances for Sunday's EMA gala. She was nominated in seven categories, including artist of the year and song of the year. But the American pop star had to look snug at all prices.

This year's artist instead became Shawn Mendes and the award for this year's song went to Billie Eilish for "Bad guy". Eilish also received the award for this year's newcomer, a category in which Swedish Mabel was nominated.

Mabel had two more chances to win, but eventually had to leave the gala in Spanish Sevilla empty-handed.

Halsey, who was the guest of the last Friday finale of TV4's "Idol", received the award for this year's pop and Green Day was named rock of the year.

Liam Gallagher, who performed at the gala and, among other things, sang Oasis "Wonderwall", received the newly established honorary award "Rock Icon".
