The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities and candidate of the PSOE to Congress for Alicante, Pedro Duque, has submerged this Sunday in the waters of the Island of Tabarca to learn about the effects of climate change on fisheries management in the Alicante coast.

Pedro Duque has dived with eight scientists from the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Alicante in the marine reserve of the Island of Tabarca, in front of the city of Alicante.

During the dive, led by professors José Luis Sánchez Lizaso and Aitor Forcada, Duque has been able to sample Posidonia and fish density, as well as visit groundwater temperature sensors, experiments that are part of the research project work of the University Department.

After the dive, Pedro Duque has declared that the Tabarca marine reserve , created in 1986 from a study of the research group that accompanied him, is an example of successful environmental policies .

"Thanks to the protection of the area, the reserve today contributes to improving biodiversity and also fishing catches in nearby areas , so it is studied as a model and has been exported to other countries," he said.

The researchers at the University of Alicante have been able to present two of the European projects in which they work. One of them, called Reserve Benefit, has evaluated the increase in the number of fish and genetic biodiversity in areas adjacent to the reserve. The other, called Tropical Signal, monitors temperature conditions and other parameters to determine how climate change is affecting the Mediterranean Sea.

Duque has valued the political leadership of the Government and the PSOE in the fight against the global climate crisis and as proof of this he cited the decision of the UN to move to Spain the celebration of the World Climate Summit within a month , which was initially to be held in Chile, but the Andean country renounced it due to the situation of widespread protests and public disorders in which it is located.

The socialist candidate has declared that this Summit "will be vitally important to get concrete commitments from countries to mitigate climate change." It has also influenced the fact that research and innovation "are key to finding technological solutions that allow us to face the consequences of the climatic emergency".
