At least 42 people have been killed and dozens injured in anti-government protests in Haiti since mid-September, the UN human rights commission said.

In a statement, UNHCR expressed deep concern about the two-month crisis in Haiti.

Haiti, the poorest in the Americas, has been undergoing protests, sparked by fuel shortages, but has seen violence and expanded into a campaign demanding the resignation of President Juvenel Moyes.

"We are deeply concerned about the deepening crisis in Haiti and its impact on the ability of Haitians to access their basic rights of health care, food, education and other needs," the UNHCR said.
