Phil died of exhaustion after being forced to carry tourists on a safari in Sri Lanka.

The elephant, nicknamed Kanakota, was carrying a group of tourists in the heat, when he could not walk and fell out of exhaustion.

The incident follows an investigation by the Moving Motions Group, which found disturbing evidence that the "safari" elephants were chained and threatened spear-like violence.

Tour groups sit on chairs carried by elephants on their backs.

The 18-year-old elephant is believed to have carried three groups of tourists the day of his death and participated in a parade the day before.
