A fire on a train in Pakistan on Thursday killed at least 46 people when a cooking stove used by passengers to prepare their breakfast exploded, police said.

The fire destroyed three train cars near the town of Rahim Yar Khan in Pakistan's southern Punjab province.
District police chief Amir Taimur Khan told Geo that the death toll had risen to 46.
"Two cooking stoves exploded. They cooked and there was oil (food) which added fire to the fire," Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told the channel earlier.

Baqir Hussain, head of the region's rescue service, said the death toll was likely to rise and 15 people were wounded.

The state of Pakistan's colonial-era rail system has deteriorated in the past few decades due to lack of investment and poor maintenance.
Eleven people were killed in an accident in July and four others died in September.
A train crash in Sindh province killed about 130 people in 2005.
