Pastor Horace Burgess received a mandate from God . "If you build me a tree house, you will never run out of material," says the Most High. Two decades later, this man from Crossville, Tennessee, continued to expand what became the largest tree house in the world. Last week, a fire devoured it in less than 15 minutes.
The local newspaper, The Crossville Chronicle , uploaded a video of the flares on its Facebook profile. Actually, everyone who peered into the fire last Tuesday night knew exactly what was burning. " It breaks my heart . When I met the tree house, it seemed incredible," wrote a Chronicle reader.
The one known as Minister's Treehouse had begun to climb through the forest in the early 1990s. Burgess was determined to answer God's call. "When Noah built his arch, people were also skeptical," he said in an interview.
With wooden planks he got here and there he wrapped the tree branches until there came a time that the cabin was a mansion. He reached five heights , with a bell tower that rose even higher towards the sky. Inside it housed rooms, kitchen and classes. It was decorated with wood carvings and a pulpit.
It would be nothing more than the pilgrim idea of a more and less crippled guy, if it weren't because, very soon, it became a place of pilgrimage and began to fill up with the curious. Not only from this town, but also from Nashville, two hours away by car, and beyond. So much so that he began to reap headlines such as "The biggest tree house in the world."
Burgess offered to give tours of his particular cathedral. Both devotee and so much wood, however, began to disturb the fire department. And in 2012 they decided that Burgess should close. He himself put the sign: "Closed by state fire authorities. File your complaints with them ."
According to NPR radio , two police patrols saw the flames miles away, but when they arrived at the place, at 10:30 at night, the entire deck was shattered. There was nothing to do. Burgess had recently sold the property , although it seems that the new owner wanted to keep the gigantic log cabin.
No one knows how the fire broke out. With no victims to regret or insurance involved, it is likely that there is not even an investigation. The largest tree house in the world is history.
