HBO will not continue with the prequel to Game of Thrones that Naomi Watts was going to lead and which was postulated as the first series derived from this great epic fantasy blockbuster, Deadline specialized media reported Tuesday .

This now canceled project already had a first pilot episode shot, but finally HBO has opted not to continue the Game of Thrones universe along this path and will not develop the series.

Watts was to be the star of this prequel set thousands of years before the stories that are told in the series, which said goodbye this year to the audience after eight spectacular and successful seasons that made it a historical phenomenon of the small screen.

Jane Goldman, scriptwriter of films like Stardust (2007) or Kingsman: Secret Service (2014), had created this prequel with George RR Martin, the author of the novels that inspired Game of Thrones and the great brain behind it complex and convoluted fantasy world.

Goldman, who was to be the showrunner (head of a series) of this prequel, has written emails to his team and cast announcing that the project will not go ahead.

HBO has not confirmed this news at the moment.

Of all the projects shuffled to extend the audiovisual adaptations of Game of Thrones, this was the one that had gone so far.

Along with Watts were also cast actors such as Miranda Richardson, Marquis Rodriguez, Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Josh Whitehouse, Ivanno Jeremiah or Jamie Campbell Bower.

In the middle of last September it was learned that HBO was close to giving the green light to another possible series derived from Game of Thrones, which would also be a prequel but would be centered on the Targaryen House.

Second prequel

At that time, HBO was about to commission a pilot episode about that hypothetical prequel.

That project was created by George RR Martin and screenwriter Ryan Condal, whose curriculum includes the Colony series .

This prequel that is still in development is inspired by the book Fire & Blood (2018), whose narration is placed about 300 years before the events narrated in the series and that goes into the history of the Targaryen, one of the most important houses of this universe

Game of Thrones won 12 figurines in the 2019 edition of the Emmy with which it extended to 59 its absolute record of the most successful series in the history of the most important television awards.
