• Biodiversity: A rare species of giant jellyfish reaches the Mediterranean

The volunteers of the Center for Studies and Conservation of Marine Animals (CECAM) of Ceuta have located in the waters near the Ceuta coast a specimen of giant jellyfish that is very rare in these waters and whose presence is associated with climate change .

According to CECAM sources, the specimen is a Rhizostoma Luteum , which is a known species because it can weigh 40 kilos and measure up to 60 centimeters .

Since its discovery it has been mentioned in the scientific literature rarely because some researchers even questioned its existence until in the summer of 2012 about 50 specimens were observed on the Spanish coast of the Mediterranean, thus definitely demonstrating its existence.

The specimen has been located this weekend in waters near the beach of Sarchal de Ceuta and it had been found in places such as the coasts of Murcia, Almeria, Granada or Malaga , but there were no records of a copy of these characteristics in Ceuta.

Specialists have stressed that despite the size of this species, its bite only causes mild irritation .

Ceuta experts have taken photographs and videos to record the presence of this specimen in the waters of the city.
