The performance of Bunraku Ningyo Joruri, directed by contemporary art writer Hiroshi Sugimoto, began in New York, USA, and visitors visited the world of stories woven by dolls.

Ningyo Joruri's “Sonezaki Shinchu” directed by contemporary art writer Hiroshi Sugimoto is an explosive popular performance during the Edo period. This is a work that combines traditional and contemporary art, such as adding new songs.
It has been performed not only in Japan but also in Europe and has received high acclaim.

The first performance in New York began with a four-day schedule as part of an event introducing Japanese culture and art. On the first day of the 19th, about 1,000 people visited the New York theater.

On the stage, while the video work of the artist “Tsukumo” was screened in the background, the dolls performed delicate movements along the shamisen, and the visitors were experiencing the sad love story of men and women woven by the dolls .

The New Yorkers who had finished watching said, “I was impressed by the story, but I was surprised by the richness of emotions expressed by the dolls.”

Mr. Sugimoto, who was the artistic director, said, “I want to be surprised to learn that human dolls can be perfectly expressed through dolls, along with the sophistication of traditional Japanese dolls.”
