• Barbie and the European Space Agency team up to inspire future astronauts

The year was 1963 when, in full space race, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel to space. Tereskhova flew alone aboard the Vostok 6 capsule, within the framework of the Soviet space program Vostok (East, in Spanish) that Yuri Gagarin inaugurated.

The astronaut orbited the Earth 48 times on a mission that lasted more than 70 hours. He traveled much farther than his predecessors. From the Russian government they took advantage of this success to highlight their commitment to equality. In this way, and in the middle of the Cold War, the female space walk began.

The second woman to perform this feat was also Russian: Svetlana Savitskaja (1982). American cosmonaut Sally Ride repeated it a year later.

More than half a century later, two astronauts, Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, will make history again since they will take place today, October 18, the first space walk of women only with the aim of solving a technical failure in the International Space Station (ISS), a walk that will be broadcast live from 6.30 in the morning (US time) on the NASA channel. It will be the fourth for Koch and the first for Jesiica Meir.

The mission of these cosmonauts, which was scheduled for October 21, has been advanced because the batteries they had to replace, which are responsible for supplying power to the ship, broke down last weekend. A milestone 400 kilometers from Earth that will last about seven hours.

However, the date changes of this tour are not new; NASA had planned for the end of March, but had to be canceled due to the lack of a size M suit for one of the two professionals who had to participate in the mission, a setback that put the body in evidence.

More than 200 spacewalks

Since the ISS received its first 'inhabitants', there have been more than 200 spacewalks, but only 15 of them have participated women, and always accompanied by a man.

It seems that NASA has proposed to take a small step for women and end decades of inequality, as the movie Hidden Figures. In addition to this trip, the Agency plans to send the first astronaut to the Moon before the end of 2024, within the framework of the Artemis mission. Of course, if there is no problem with the costumes.
