Three Spanish films pass the cut for the Oscar nominations for animation

"It is neither an exhaustive cut nor is it simply a matter of presenting the documentation," says producer Manuel Cristóbal to try to explain the meaning of the list of 32 films made public on Wednesday by the Academy of Los Angeles. For the first time, there will be five nominees and also for the first time a list has been prepared with all possible candidates. Among the obvious favorites to succeed 'Spider-man: a new universe', which won last year, 'Toy story 4', by Pixar; 'How to train your dragon 3', from Dreamworks, and 'I lost my body', from Netflix.

But with everything and when it comes to Spanish cinema, the highlight is the unprecedented triple presence of a Hispanic production. 'Buñuel in the labyrinth of the turtles', by Salvador Simó, 'One more day with life', by Raúl de la Fuente and Damian Nenow, and 'La leyenda de Klaus', by Sergio Pablos, make history just by being there. "That is already a triumph," adds the producer of the principle that represents the first of the films cited in the paragraph.

'Buñuel ...' was already in the list of films sent by the Spanish Academy to the category of non-English-speaking films next to 'Dolor y gloria', by Almodóvar, and 'While the war lasts', by Amenábar; 'One more day with life' has already won both the Goya and the European Film Award in its category in 2018, and 'Klaus' is a Netflix production that is still waiting for release next Christmas.

Members enrolled in the animation category of the American Academy may vote for the selection of the five finalist candidates. The rest of the academics will have to prove that they have seen a minimum number of tapes in order to participate in the selection.

The nominees will be announced on January 13 and the Oscar ceremony will be held on February 9.
