Soviet cosmonaut and first spacewalker , Alexéi Leónov, died today at age 85 as a result of a prolonged illness, Russian television channel 'Rossiya 24' reported.

Leónov was the eleventh Soviet cosmonaut and the first person to perform a spacewalk, for which he deserved the double title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

On March 18, 1965, four years after the first space trip, starring cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet Union returned to the US again when Leonov marked a new milestone, by completing the first spacewalk in history.

Leonov spent 12 minutes out of his capsule. A cable of just over five meters kept him attached to the aircraft.
