As a child, Guillermo del Toro watched with awe horror films, giving preference to monsters rather than people who defeated them. Before going into directing, he worked in the field of special effects for about ten years and studied the art of makeup with the legendary Dick Smith. The visionary’s gaze was already evident in the first full-length film “Chronos”, which the director supplied with a mass of characters. Eclectic style, metaphors and allegories are also inherent in such director's paintings as “Mutants”, “Devil's Ridge” and “Fauna Labyrinth”. Del Toro hatched the idea of his triumphal work “The Form of Water” for several years, and was inspired to create it as a child by watching the picture “Creature from the Black Lagoon”. The film brought the director of the Venetian Golden Lion and four Oscars. On October 9, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro celebrates his 55th birthday.
