“His music brings great happiness to people”: composer Gia Kancheli died

In Tbilisi, after a long illness, the Georgian composer and pianist Gia Kancheli died. The musician was 84 years old. He received his first education at the Faculty of Geology of the University of Tbilisi, but after he decided to devote his life to music and entered the conservatory. Kancheli created chamber and instrumental music, wrote compositions for orchestra and choral performance. The works of his authorship are heard in the performances of George Tovstonogov at the Bolshoi Drama Theater and productions of the Tbilisi Shota Rustaveli Theater. For his Fourth Symphony “In Memory of Michelangelo” Kancheli was awarded the USSR State Prize. He also wrote music for popular Soviet paintings. Among them are films directed by George Danelia "Mimino", "Kin-dza-dza" and "Do not Cry." In 1988, Gia Kancheli received the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
