The contact lens company Aqua V from Johnson & Johnson has recalled a batch of its daily Acuvue Moist lenses specifically because they may be contaminated with particles that cause eyeball irritations, according to the Mirror website.

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority said contact lenses or contact lens solutions may contain molecules that can come into contact with and scratch the eyes.

These molecules on contact lenses or in lens cleaning solution may cause eye redness, discomfort, corneal erosion, or so-called corneal damage if they are not observed before the lens is inserted into the eye.

So far, there have been no reports of serious damage to the lens wearers, but ophthalmologists and optometrists were notified of the call-up campaign and asked to alert patients.

"Although the risk is low, we are taking every precaution to keep the medicines safe," said Mark Pierce, director of the group's safety and monitoring group at the British Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority.

"So it's important that as many customers as possible are aware of the need to check their lenses.
