A Florida court heard a possible murder plot by a husband who wanted to kill his wife, but the plot backfired.

The defendant, Henry Herbig, 65, appeared in court via video link while lying on a bed and tied to a ventilator when prosecutors uncovered the plot of the crime he intended to carry out.

According to prosecutors, Herbig left his home in Pace, Florida on September 8, with his car pulling a trailer loaded with garbage bags, rolling tape, plastic wires and extra gas so he would not have to stop.

According to court documents, Herbig, who drove to his former home in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where his wife lives, was armed with a rifle, a steel nuts and a wooden stick. To carry out his plan to the fullest, he left his phone at home, so it could not be tracked, stopped in small shops without surveillance cameras, and used only cash to pay for food and drink.

Prosecutors said Herbig wore a wig and masqueraded in an attempt to kill his wife so he did not know who committed the crime. His complicated plans, however, disintegrated and collapsed after arriving at his former home, when his eldest daughter-in-law confronted him and shot him in self-defense, immediately paralyzing him.

Herbig had hoped to make his wife's disappearance and death seem like a robbery that ended in murder. At the hearing, Herbig's lawyers demanded his release on bail on the grounds that Virginia Beach would not be able to meet his medical needs, but the court judge agreed with the prosecutor's demand that the suspect's wealth make him able to escape.

She would reconsider these conditions if Herbig was able to provide further details on where he would reside, if he was released on bail.
