Awa Ningyo Joruri 4K video and "collaboration" Performance in Paris September 24th 9:53

The Tokushima traditional puppet show “Awa Ningyo Joruri” was performed using the background of 4K video at the headquarters of the UNESCO UN Educational Science and Culture Organization in Paris, France.

Awa Ningyo Joruri is a puppet show that was developed in Tokushima Prefecture and designated as an important intangible folk cultural asset.

One of the oldest puppet theaters in Tokushima Prefecture, “Katsuura-za”, performed for the first time at the headquarters of UNESCO on the evening of the 23rd.

This time, instead of the traditional stage background, a CG-processed 4K video is projected on a large screen, the “Shisan Sanban” dedicated to local festivals, and the wife ’s affection for supporting deaf husbands. Two performances called “Kisaka Kannon Reiken” were performed.

The audience was amazed by the emotional movements and gestures created by the three puppeteers manipulating a single doll against a vivid 4K video.

A woman living in Paris said, “The movement of the doll was very detailed and I was surprised. The crying figure of a doll felt like a human being.”

After the performance, Sadao Matsuda, head of the Puppet Theater, said, “I have had a good experience while trying new expressions, and I will do my best to make the younger generation inherit the tradition.”

The performance will be held in Paris on the 24th.
