Swedish Renck started the talk for the directorial prize by hooking on Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who when she thanked her for the best comedy lead role said that the "Fleabag" team was the best family you can have.

"My family is better than your family," Renck joked with Waller-Bridge.

The HBO success "Chernobyl" also received the award for best miniseries, written by Craig Mazin.

Stellan Skarsgård also had a chance at a prize for his role in "Chernobyl". But the award for best male supporting role in a miniseries went to Ben Whishaw for "A very English scandal".

No price to Louis-Dreyfus

Waller-Bridge sniffing favorite-tipped Julia Louis-Dreyfus from "Veep" at the comedy lead role was one of the gala's great sensations.

"It's really wonderful and reassuring to know that a dirty, perverted, cursed and flippant woman can get to Emmy," Waller-Bridge said.

Louis-Dreyfus, who has taken the lead role award a number of previous years, was content to joke about her disappointment when she, along with several others, presented another award.

- Excuse me, I thought I'd stand alone here.
