Several buildings around the world were lit last night with the famous bat signal to celebrate the 80th anniversary of DC Comics' superhero Batman's debut.

Photos posted on social media showed buildings and landmarks illuminated with the icon in Melbourne, Tokyo, Johannesburg, Berlin and New York, among other cities. Thousands of personal lovers wore his famous clothes and mask.

On its Web site, DC Comics said it has teamed up with thousands of comic book retailers, bookstores, schools and libraries around the world to host anniversary events.

Since debuting in the Detective Comics series in 1939, Batman has become one of the world's most famous superheroes.

Batman inspired several films, which ran from the 1960s to the present day, in which Adam West, George Clooney and Christian Bell, among others, wore a bat suit.
