  • Global strike: Millions of people participate today in protest actions

Crowd demonstrations, with special participation of young people and students, have shaken several cities on the planet this Friday in protest of climate change.

Before the imminent UN summit that will take place in New York, activist Greta Thunberg led the march in the city of skyscrapers, at the same time that various acts of protest were taking place in numerous parts of the globe.

Thousands of young people and students led the demonstration in Paris, in an action that has achieved great impact and, as planned, will continue on Saturday from the hand of the so-called "yellow vests" , which has raised a great concern of the French authorities

Around 15,000 people, according to figures provided by the Belgian Police, demonstrated through the center of Brussels, on a tour that included the train station in the north of the city, the European quarter and the Cinquantenaire park.

In Spain , the Fridays For Future movement intensified this Friday mobilizations for the weather. The group has been especially active in Valencia, where, in addition to pasting protest posters throughout the city and placing masks on the statues, it has filed a motion at the City Council to declare the "climatic emergency" in the capital of Turia .

"If the necessary measures are not taken, in 2030 we will reach a point of no return" and "the collapse" will occur, the spokesmen of the collective warned this Friday during the presentation of the mobilization program. In his opinion, "politicians do not act" although "the future of millions of young people is at stake," reports Efe.

According to the organizers, the protests on Friday will be only the starting signal of what is intended to be a "week for the future" , full of calls in the face of the climate crisis.

The actions will culminate on the 27th with the strike called by several entities and backed by more than 300 organizations.

In Asia , several cities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh participated in the global strike, while in Oceania , thousands of schoolchildren staged mass demonstrations in cities such as Sydney, Manila, Bangkok, Melbourne or Singapore.

The director of Greenpeace in France, Jean-François Julliard, stressed the importance of pressuring the public authorities to adopt policies that stop the effects of climate warming.

"It is essential to show that we are numerous and that this manifestation is not the last, that we follow the pressure in the following months," he said.

Julliard said that the effects of climate warming "are already evident in some territories" but that "it is not too late to limit their damage."
